Vinegar Cleaning Solution Cleaning with vinegar is a perfect solution to kill germs, brighten shine, remove grease and this green option is 100 percent environmentally friendly. When I first started using vinegar cleaning solutions, I was amazed by how well they cleaned. However, although the strong vinegar aroma dissipates quickly, the scent was not what I was used to when I had used conventional products. I learned to add natural fragrances and essential oils to scent the vinegar cleaning solutions I made so they cleaned well and smelled great. The following recipes for toilet bowl, window, floor, surface and counter cleaners as well as a fabric softener all use vinegar as the main ingredient. Vinegar and baking soda are an excellent green option for use to clean a toilet inside and out. Vinegar loosens lime deposits and kills germs making it an effective alternative to conventional, chemical-laden, expensive cleaning products. To use vinegar and baking soda to clean the toilet, and other surfaces in the bathroom, pour ½ cup of baking soda around the inside of the toilet. Spray all surfaces of the toilet and under the toilet rim with a mixture of ¼ cup vinegar with 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon baking soda in a spray bottle. Add 8 drops of orange, lemon or pine essential oil to the mixture and shake well. Wipe the excess mixture off the outside of the toilet and use a toilet brush to clean the toilet. Flush the toilet and rinse the toilet brush in the clean water. Spray the toilet brush with the vinegar solution before placing in the brush holder to keep it smelling fresh. Mix ½ to 1 cup of vinegar into a regular bucket of warm water for an effective, disinfecting floor cleaner. Add 10 to 15 drops of a freshly scented essential oil such as lemon, orange, pine or lime to the water after filling the bucket. The floors will dry without a film on them. Add about 3 tablespoons of cooking oil to the water while the bucket is filling to add shine to wood floors. RESOURCES: Further research on the cleaning properties of vinegar is ongoing. |
