Reduce exposure to chemicals

Seven (7) Easy Ways to Reduce Chemical Exposure in Daily Life

As more people become aware of the risks associated with exposure to common chemicals, many people want to reduce exposure to chemicals in daily life. This list will greatly reduce exposure without much effort and save money, too.

A recent search that landed a visitor in the Sunflower Naturals web site was, "how to reduce chemical exposure in daily life." This is quite a long search phrase, but shows that people are looking for ways to reduce exposure as they become aware of the risks associated with chronic exposure to common chemicals in consumer goods.

1. Reduce or eliminate the use of plastics for food storage. Soft plastics contain phthalates and/or BPA. Many studies have linked these endocrine disrupting chemicals to cancers and reproductive disorders. The National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences states to use glass in the microwave to avoid increased leaching of chemicals into foods from heated plastic containers. Choose food storage containers made of glass, ceramic or stainless steel.

2. Choose green or natural cleaning products to reduce exposure to volatile organic compounds, which, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, are regulated air pollutants with concentrations up to 10 times higher in indoor air than outdoor air. If the label does not clarify exactly what is in the product, it quite likely contains only some natural ingredients and may contain chemicals that increase risk of diseases such as cancer and asthma. Consider saving a lot of money by purchasing Sunflower Naturals Non-Toxic Cleaning Guide for helpful, simple, effective and extremely cheap cleaning solutions for almost all household cleaning needs.

3. Body care products contain numerous untested chemicals. Studies located in the National Library of Medicine web site show that many of the chemicals and chemical combinations might be harmful to human health. Consider purchasing Sunflower Naturals Non-Toxic Body Care for helpful, fully researched, effective and inexpensive body care solutions and home remedies. Read labels for products that are purchased and check the ingredients in a safety database, such as the one located on the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics web site to ensure the chemicals used are shown to have minimal or no risks.

4. When purchasing and replacing home furnishings, avoid synthetic materials and manufactured wood products. Many of the synthetic and manufactured products contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, which studies show increase the risk of reproductive disorders and birth defects as well as plasticizers, which studies show increase the risk of developing reproductive cancers and asthma.

5. Open windows and replace the air in your home at least once a week; preferably after cleaning, to remove chemically saturated air in your home. The Environmental Protection Agency has stated for many years that indoor air is two to ten times more polluted than outdoor air due to the chemicals in products that are commonly used in the home.

6. Dust with a damp rag. All that is needed is water to pick up and remove house dust. Studies by the University of Denmark, Stockholm University, the University of Texas, Karlstad University and others show that house dust contains phthalates, which are chemicals linked to increased respiratory illnesses as well as asthma and allergies in both children and adults.

7. Read the labels for processed foods, shampoo, lotions and other body care products and look for the word 'paraben'. Methylparaben is most of the type of paraben used in food products, but after being banned in Denmark for use in children's products, it might be wise to reduce or eliminate exposure to parabens for yourself and your family.
