Chemicals to Avoid While Pregnant As the results of long-term studies are completed on the health risks to the mother and child from exposure to certain household chemicals during pregnancy, it is becoming obvious that exposure during gestation is the likely cause of the dramatic increase of non-communicable diseases such as miscarriages, birth defects, asthma, allergies, diabetes and cancer over the last 30 to 50 years. You are exposed to many chemicals during the day from numerous consumer goods. Products such as plastics leach particles into the air, synthetic fragrances in cleaning and body care products created with chemicals are inhaled and absorbed through the skin, chemicals in food products for colors, flavors and preservatives. Add all those exposures to even more exposure from cleaning products, wood preservatives, wall paint, floor sealant, carpet and upholstery. To be honest, chemical exposure from each product is within limits determined to be 'safe'. However, product studies do not take exposure from other consumer goods that contain the same 'safe' level into consideration. The daily accumulated exposure from multiple products puts most people way above known 'safe' daily limits of chemical exposures. Studies are showing that exposure to high levels of chemicals in common household products during pregnancy may have life-long harmful health effects. RESOURCES: Currently being updated. |
